What Exactaly is a Siopao?
What exactly is a Siopao? Siopao is the Filipino version of the pork bun. Zhu Geliang a military strategist from China was said to have invented the steamed bun as a sacrifice to the Gods for healing. In other culture it is known as: Baozi in Mandarin, Baau in Cantonese, Bahn in Vietnamese, Salapao in Thailand and Chuuka Manjuu in Japan.
The Siopao came to the Philippines in the early 1900s by a Chinese immigrant named Ma Mon Luk. In many different legends it is said that Ma Mon Luk was a teacher in China. He came to the Philippines in order to prove to his girlfriend's family that he was a man work marrying. Ma Mon Luk brought Mami, Sumai and Siopao to the Philppines.
In the Philippines the Siopao comes in different flavors, which include: BolaBola (which is meatball filling) and chicken and pork asado (which is like BBQ flavor). It can also be filled with sweet flavoring like ube or red/green bean paste. My mom actually makes it with adobo flavor! YUM!

About Freshly Steamed.
Freshly Steamed was created because I had always wanted to create a web comic. I just didn't have any idea for a comic. Then one day I was thinking about siopao and how much I wanted to eat one (lol). Not only are they yummy but they are so cute and round. I then thought of making a simple character based off of the siopao. The first comic I ever drew was called, “Freshly Steamed”, which showed Sio and Munched were talking about life. I later decided that the name didn’t really stick for the name of that particular strip. Instead I thought that “Freshly Steamed” was a great name for the entire comic.
